Q: How do I know what lesson to register my child into?

A: You can refer to our transition chart. If you have any questions or are still unsure contact Client Services at either khs.cs@uregina.ca or call (306) 585-4371.

Q: Why do some Red Cross levels seem to match up with the LifeSaving Society but others do not?

A: Red Cross and The LifeSaving Society are two separate organizations, which have similar but different guidelines, when it comes to their swimming programs. The LifeSaving Society program is set up to work on certain skills, based on your child’s age and ability. If you are unsure of where to place your child, please refer to our lesson transition chart or contact Client Services (khs.cs@uregina.ca or 306-585-4371).

Q: How are The LifeSaving Society lessons structured?

A: Their swimming program is split into a few different sections depending on the age and ability of the child. The sections the University will be offering are Pre-school (non-parented lessons), Swim for Life and Swim Patrol.

Q: What is Swim for Life?

A: Swim for Life is made up of Swimmer 1 – Swimmer 6 lessons. They are they equivalent to Red Cross’s Swim Kids Level 1 – Level 7. Please see the transition chart to best know what lesson to put your child in.

Q: What is Swim Patrol?

A: Swim Patrol is made up of three levels (Rookie, Ranger and Star) and is equivalent to Swim Kids levels 8, 9, and 10. Here kids will be introduced to first aid and lifesaving training. Skills taught in these courses will benefit anyone working towards becoming a life guard or those wanting to improve their skills in and around the water. Please see the transition chart to best know what lesson to put your child in.

Q: If my child has completed Level 10 from Red Cross what do I register them into?

A: If your child has passed Swim Kids Level 10 and are under 13 or are 13+ they can be registered into Star Patrol. After they complete Star Patrol and if they still wish to continue their swimming lessons they can enter into Bronze Star. This course provides the first certification needed in becoming a life guard. Further certifications will not be offered here at the University but will be offered through the City of Regina.

Q: Will you be offering swimming lessons for adults?

A: Yes, we will offer group learn to swim courses as well as female only courses. These lessons are based on the Swim for Life Adult levels 1 – 3. Level 1 is focused on introductory swimming skills, while levels 2 & 3 work on enhancing skills as participants become more comfortable in the water.

Q: How long are the Lessons?

A: The University will be following The Lifesaving Society’s swimming lesson recommended guidelines. As per these recommendations, Pre-School sessions are recommended to be 30 minutes in length, Swim for Life level 1 & 2 is recommended to be 30 minutes while levels 3 – 6 is recommended to be 45 minutes in length. Swim Patrol is recommended to be 60 minutes in length. The fees for the additional length is reflected in the program fee.

Q: Will the University still be offering private lessons?

A: Yes. We understand that some children and/or adults prefer the one on one lesson set. Private lessons are great for specific skill development, catching a child up to lessons with children their age or if they prefer one on one instruction. If your child is in Rookie, Ranger and/or Star patrol, we encourage you to put your child in the group lessons as there is not enough time in a private to complete the requirements.

Q: What does Water Smart Safety mean?

A: The Lifesaving Society puts an emphasis on Water Smart Safety, which provides participants with knowledge and skills that are vital to the prevention of drowning and overall water safety. These concepts will be taught in an interactive way throughout every Swim for Life level.
