President's Research Chair and Chancellor's Research Chair

The President’s Research Chair was established in 2020 to recognize exceptional scholars who have received great distinction in research. The President’s Research Chair is intended to encourage and sustain high levels of scholarly activity by faculty and to retain faculty who have made, and will continue to make, exceptional contributions to research in their field.  The award will be presented to a senior academic at the rank of Full Professor.  Current chair holders are not eligible.

The Chancellor’s Research Chair was established in 2020 to recognize emerging scholars who have received great distinction in research and community-based work. The Chancellor’s Research Chair is intended to encourage and sustain high levels of scholarly activity by faculty, and to retain faculty who have made, and will continue to make, exceptional contributions within the community.  The award will be presented to an academic at the rank of Associate Professor. Current chair holders are not eligible.

The selected recipients are awarded the following entitlements:

  • The recipient will be named “President’s Research Chair” or “Chancellor’s Research Chair” for a two-year term;
  • Appropriate recognition of the Research Chairs will be made, including a campus wide announcement and recognition on the University of Regina website;
  • One (1) course release per year (July 1 to June 30) and research funding to support research activity of $25,000/year for the President's Research Chair and $20,000/year for the Chancellor's Research Chair.

 The selected recipient will have the following responsibilities:

  • Deliver the President’s Research Lecture or Chancellor’s Research Lecture (offered in alternate years);
  • Annual end-of-period report to be submitted by each Chair to the Dean of the home Faculty and shared with the University Executive Team.

Application:  The Vice-President (Research) will announce a Call for Submissions to be issued when the President’s or Chancellor’s Research Chair(s) is vacated or the incumbent has reached the term limit. 

Selection:  An Adjudication Committee will review submissions and make a recommendation to the Vice-President (Research) who has final authority, assessing candidates on the following criteria:

  • Exceptional record of research, scholarly, or creative activity excellence and productivity;
  • Evidence of strong impact and recognition, including attention to contributions within the community for the Chancellor’s Research Chair;
  • Alignment of the nominee’s research goals to the University of Regina Strategic Plan;
  • Evidence of engagement in mentorship;
