Biography:

Carter Powley is an active freelance saxophonist, clarinetist, flautist, composer/arranger, and educator, holding degrees in music composition and education from the University of Regina. His repertoire both as a player and writer ranges from jazz to classical, funk, rock, latin, blues, and more.

His influences and idols have included Charles Mingus, Booker Ervin, and Eric Dolphy and he has shared the stage with Canadian jazz icon P.J. Perry, guitar virtuoso Jack Semple, long-time jazz bassist Peter Dyksman, pianist Bob Moyer and his Big Band, Michael Kaeshammer, vocalist Kevin Mohagany, Karen Plato, Jason Marsalis, Wayne Bergeron, Ranee Lee, singer/songwriter and Juno nominee Alysha Brilla, and 'Tower of Power' drummer Herman Matthews to name a few. He has performed in pit orchestras for touring performances of Chicago, Book of Mormon, local professional productions of My Fair Lady, Shrek the Musical, Pirates of Penzance, Singing in the Rain, and many other professional and community musical theatre production.

Teachers have ranged from jazz pianist Ken Jefferson to classical saxophonist Karen Finnsson and composer Alain Perron. Many have recognized Powley’s gifts both for writing and playing and as a freshman at the U of R he had his works performed by professional orchestras in Kitchener-Waterloo and Regina. Carter can be found performing in many settings in Regina and throughout Saskatchewan and beyond.
