October 4 - Religious Studies Ideas Lecture Series

Lived Conspirituality: Researching Conspiracy Theories and Alternative Spiritualities

Conspirituality—that is, the connection between conspiracy theories and “alternative” spiritualities—has recently gained popularity in academic and non-academic circles. Often associated with populist and irrational beliefs, it has been linked to right-wing politics, faulty thinking, and disruptive and potentially violent behavior. Speaker: Dr. Giovanna Parmigiani, Harvard Divinity School, Research Associate, Transcendence and Transformation Centre for the Study of World Religions.

October 4 from 2:30 - 4 p.m.
ED 315 Education Building

October 26 - Shockingly Scientific: Mary Shelley, Frankenstein and the New Science

Just in time for spooky season, this lecture will explore the real-life scientific discoveries that fueled the writing of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Dr. Alexis McQuigge will talk about the history of electrical experiments, early resuscitation methods, and why Shelley might have known so much about them in the first place.

She will also invite you to answer the complex question that the text leaves hanging in the air like an electrical charge in a good lightning storm: if the monster is human, why are we so afraid of him?

October 26 from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.
College Avenue Campus | Room CB112
Free admission with registration

October 27 - Jeremy Dutcher in performance

Two-Spirit song carrier, composer, and activist Jeremy Dutcher will take the stage at the University of Regina Theatre on October 27th. This concert is presented in partnership with MacKenzie Art Gallery, Sâkêwêwak First Nations Artists' Collective Inc., the Faculty of Media, Art, & Performance, and the Humanities Research Institute at the University of Regina.

Five years after rising to international acclaim with his seminal, award-winning album Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa, Jeremy Dutcher returns to the stage with a new band and pivotal new music. On the Motewolonuwok ᒣᑏᐧᐁᓓᓄᐧᐁᒃ tour, Dutcher invites audiences to be transformed by music that is more personal and intimate than ever, yet pushes the boundaries of his unique sonic landscape.
