Lowell Dean BA'02 - Distinguished Professional

Lowell Dean is an accomplished filmmaker whose work has earned national and international recognition while helping to define and sustain Saskatchewan’s film and television industry. As a writer and director,
Lowell has directed six feature films since 2013 – a level of creative output that is rare in the Canadian industry. Following the elimination of Saskatchewan’s film tax credit in 2012, the province became one of the most challenging environments in the country for film production. While many industry professionals left, Lowell remained committed to building his career at home—choosing to film in Saskatchewan whenever possible, championing local talent, and bringing the province’s stories to wider audiences.
Lowell has played a pivotal leadership role in strengthening Saskatchewan’s screen industries, serving as Saskatchewan Chair of the Directors Guild of Canada, and as a board member of the Saskatchewan Motion Picture Industry Association (now Screen Saskatchewan). His career reflects not only professional excellence, but a deep commitment to community, mentorship, and the growth of Saskatchewan’s creative industries.

Betty (Hoffart) Fornwald BEd'81

Betty (Hoffart) Fornwald
was a true trailblazer for the University of Regina women's basketball program. Originally from Gladmar, Saskatchewan, she made an immediate impact upon joining the Cougettes in 1977–78, emerging as a key contributor on a strong squad that posted a 10–6 record in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Fornwald's game reached new heights the following season, as she earned GPAC second-team all-star honours while leading the Cougettes to an 11–5 conference record and their first-ever appearance at the CIAU Championship which was hosted by the U of R. Her standout play drew national attention, earning her a place among the final 15 players in contention for Canada’s 1980 Olympic team, a remarkable achievement despite the country's eventual boycott of the Moscow Games. She continued to build on her legacy in 1979–80, earning GPAC first-team all-star recognition while becoming the program’s first-ever All-Canadian selection. Fornwald capped off her exceptional four-year career in 1981 by receiving the University of Regina President's Award, recognizing her outstanding achievements both on the court and in the classroom.

2000 Rams Team

The
2000 University of Regina Rams authored one of the most remarkable playoff runs in Canadian university football history, accomplishing it all in just their second season at the CIAU level. The Rams won their final two regular season games to secure a postseason berth, then elevated their play when it mattered most. In a dramatic Canada West semifinal, the Rams edged the Calgary Dinos 33–32 on a Jon Ryan punt single on the final play of the game. They carried that momentum into the Hardy Cup, where a touchdown catch by Neal Hughes with just eight seconds remaining lifted the Rams to a 25–22 victory over Manitoba and secured the program's first conference championship. The Rams' post-season magic continued on the national stage. Facing the Saint Mary's Huskies in the Atlantic Bowl in Halifax, the Rams staged yet another stunning comeback, scoring the final 16 points of the game to claim a 40–36 victory and punch their ticket to the Vanier Cup. Their historic run came to an end in Toronto, where they fell just short in a 42–39 classic against Ottawa at the SkyDome. The 2000 Rams cemented their legacy as one of the most resilient and electrifying teams in University of Regina history, all while still in the program’s infancy at the CIAU level.

Rick Uhrich MAdmin’78 (Awarded posthumously)

Rick Uhrich wasted no time establishing himself as a cornerstone of the University of Regina's men's hockey program, bringing instant credibility in its formative years. After playing with the Cougars in 1975-76 during their season as a club team in preparation for the jump up to the CIAU level, Uhrich emerged as one of the nation's elite during the 1976-77 campaign. He tied for the Great Plains Athletic Conference scoring title with 42 points in just 22 games while earning recognition as one of the program's first two All-Canadians. He elevated his game even further the following season, earning GPAC all-star honours once again after scoring 23 goals in just 22 league contests in 1977-78. Uhrich's leadership and offensive dominance propelled the Cougars to an outstanding 18-4-0 record, a come-from-behind win over Lakehead in the best-of-three GPAC final, and the program's first-ever appearance at a national championship tournament in just its second season of existence.
