Aboriginal Co-op (U of R/FNUniv)

Co-op Education alternates practical career-related work terms with semesters in class, giving students 12-16 months of supervised work experience by the time of graduation. 

Benefits of Co-operative Education 

• Earn as you learn, which helps to cover costs so that you can continue your education
• Can earn between $1500.00 and $3000.00 per month (varies with degree and intensity of job)

Work Experience

• Work in an environment in which you feel supported while you experiment with a chosen career.
• Gain marketable skills and add needed work experience to your resume (in preparation for the workforce).

Improved Academics/Grades

• Experiential learning connects a student`s academic learning to real life applications.  You will have an opportunity to put your education to work. You will enjoy full-time paid employment while learning about the career options available to you upon completion of your degree.

U of R Aboriginal Students who have accumulated 45-75 credit hours, have attained a minimum average and are registered in the following faculties of Arts (70%), Administration (67.5%), Science (65%) and Engineering (60%) are encouraged to apply for the Aboriginal Co-op Program.  

FNUniv students Co-op Requirements:

(1) Arts Co-op: Accumulated 45-84 credit hours, 70% GPA, finished English 100 & 110, and completed 2 courses in your major.

(2) Administration Co-op: Accumulated 54-81 credit hours, 67.5% GPA, finished ADMN 007, 260, and 285.

How will participating in the Co-operative Education program affect my
student status and my ability to receive post-secondary band funding?

Each First Nation Band has different policies and procedures for their students. Some Bands have told us that they would support students who choose the path of Co-operative Education; other bands were not sure. If you are interested in this option we will send information to your post-secondary coordinator and discuss this program with them. If your Band feels it cannot support the program, then you would be free to withdraw from the program.
