Student Spotlight

What’s your name and where are you from?

My name is Darian Agecoutay and I am from Cowessess First Nation.ICE-Spotlight-Jan20.png

What are you studying and why?

Studying Cree Language Literacy to become a Cree teacher and to help preserve our language.

What are your career goals?

Short term career goal is to teach young people the language at a First Nation or public school.  Long term goal is to become a policy analyst to translate English to Cree within the public service.

What was your past summer job?  How did it align with your academic and career goals?

I have been working at Indigenous Service Canada (ISC) for three years as an HR Assistant/Student Ambassador.  Working here got my foot in the door, introduced me to the public service, provided me with good work experience, and helped me create connections.

How did you hear about this job and how did you apply?

I heard about it from the Indigenous Career Advisor at the Indigenous Career Education office.  I applied right away online with the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP).  It was really quick and easy.  I was contacted within two months, went to the interview, and was offered the job.

Would you recommend this employer to other students? Why?

Yes, especially Indigenous students because Indigenous Service Canada has a mandate to hire more Indigenous people.  It is very welcoming place to work, great experience, and opens the door to employment upon graduation.  I have also had the opportunity to work part-time though out the year.

What advice would you give other students about being successful at a job?

Work diligently; learn as much as you can: value the experience; âhkamêýimo (don’t give up)!
