Faculty member recipient of Lieutenant Governor's Arts Award

Sarah Abbott, a University of Regina associate professor in the Department of Media Production and Studies has been awarded the 2012 Lieutenant Governor's Arts Awards for Arts and Learning at a gala celebration in Saskatoon.
Abbott is known for her ambitious teaching model that brings together industry professionals and students in a rigorous professional production environment. The model has yielded two critically-acclaimed films that ignited community discussion: Out In the Cold (2008) and This Time Last Winter (2010).
“What an incredible honour to have my work recognized at the level of the province and the Lieutenant Governor,” Abbott said. “The award affirms the value of the film production teaching model I developed as well as the medium of film to generate awareness, discussion and positive change on difficult issues.”
In addition to her teaching, Abbott is a filmmaker and artist whose work engages issues of being, human rights, ethics, and the environment. She works in a variety of genres and media, with an aim to push boundaries of expression and stimulate viewer involvement. Her film and video work has received numerous grants, awards, and international festival selections.
Abbott was the driving force behind the founding of the film festival, mispon – A Celebration of Indigenous Filmmaking.
The Lieutenant Governor’s Arts Awards is an annual celebration to recognize the contribution and achievements made by Saskatchewan individuals, groups and organizations in the arts. The awards also promote public awareness, participation and support for the arts.
Lynn Channing, professor in the Department of Music, accepted a Lieutenant Governor’s Arts Award for leadership on behalf of the Regina Musical Club at the Lieutenant Governor’s Arts Awards ceremony. Channing is the president of the club.
