Undergrad Student's Advocacy Supports Future Social Workers
As the University of Regina celebrates its 50th anniversary as an independent degree-granting institution, we recognize the stories of individuals whose dedication and vision are shaping the future of our community.
One such story is that of Brad Fraser, a fourth year social work student graduating in Spring 2025. Inspired by the enduring compassion and resilience of his grandmother, Elizabeth (Betty) Fraser, Brad has established the Elizabeth (Betty) Fraser Memorial Scholarship to support future generations of social work students.
The Elizabeth (Betty) Fraser Memorial Scholarship is about reducing barriers for students who are committed to advocacy and civic engagement. — Brad Fraser
Throughout his life, Brad drew strength from his grandmother’s example. “We can’t always control the cards we’re dealt, but we can control how we play them,” he recalls—a lesson Betty lived by. Her unwavering belief in collective good and self-compassion shaped Brad’s own approach to advocacy, education, and service.
Understanding the financial barriers that many social work students face, Brad created this scholarship to reduce obstacles and encourage civic engagement. Unlike traditional awards based solely on grades, the Elizabeth (Betty) Fraser Memorial Scholarship celebrates students who demonstrate leadership, advocacy, and involvement in shaping their profession.

The scholarship has already resonated across the Faculty of Social Work. Felice Rieger, a fellow student leader, emphasized the powerful impact it will have: “This scholarship builds community. It will allow students to focus on their education and growth without the heavy burden of financial stress.”
For Brad, the creation of the scholarship is about more than financial support; it’s about inspiring future social workers to engage deeply with their communities and continue the tradition of service and empathy that Betty Fraser exemplified.
Brad and his wife Miranda, alongside fellow students, friends, and family, are raising $25,000 to establish this endowed scholarship.
