Five Questions for Paul Dederick
What made you want to become a professional development instructor?
Nothing gave me greater satisfaction in my career than when I was able to mentor and train young reporters and writers. Helping them develop into more comfortable, confident communicators was just as rewarding as any of my individual accomplishments. Having that same opportunity now, as an instructor in the Career & Professional Development program, is such an exciting prospect!

What career advice would you give your younger self?
Stand up for yourself and for what you believe in. But do it right.
Put in the work to ensure you're prepared to present the strongest case possible for yourself and your ideas, and do it in a calm, compelling, and convincing manner.
What is the most important thing you teach your students?
Everyone communicates differently. You be you and communicate in your authentic voice (but I'll provide you with some tips and tools to make the process easier and the end result more effective).

What is your favourite part of being an instructor?
Two things: generating lively conversation that opens up new thoughts and ideas for people, and seeing people walk away with one or two or three "takeaways" that give them more confidence in their communications.
If you had a career-oriented tag line or slogan, what would it be?
Learn to listen.
