Biography

James Nahachewsky (PhD) is Dean of Education at the University of Regina; working and living on Treaty Four territory as an ally of the sovereign First Nations and Métis/Michif Nation. He was born, raised and educated in Saskatchewan. As a teacher, James found a home for his passion for literacy in the middle years and secondary classrooms; quickly becoming interested in understanding the impact of digital technologies on his students’ learning and on classroom teaching. These interests led him to complete a MEd degree at the University of Saskatchewan and a PhD at the University of Alberta. Since that time, James has taught extensively at the graduate and undergraduate levels, served in a number of leadership roles including as Associate Dean Undergraduate Programs in the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria, authored numerous articles, and presented nationally and internationally on his research in literacy learning, teaching and curriculum studies. He is co-editor of the book Beyond Presentism: Re-imagining the historical, personal and social places of curriculum and, as co-applicant, is part of a research team that recently received a $2.5 million, multi-year SSHRC partnership grant for their research project entitled Visual Storytelling and Graphic Art in Genocide and Human Rights Education.
