CSIP Forum: Food insecurity in Yukon communities

Presented by:

Sara McPhee-Knowles, Faculty Member, School of Business and Leadership, Yukon University

Food insecurity has long been a concern in Canada's North - the three northern territories have the highest rates of food insecurity in the country. Particular to the Canadian policy environment is the over-reliance on food banks to address food insecurity. Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Whitehorse Food Bank saw its scope expand significantly, as it began distributing emergency food hampers to rural communities around the territory. We interviewed food bank clients in Whitehorse and two communities about their experiences with food insecurity during the pandemic. Higher food costs, travel restrictions employed as part of the COVID-19 response, and supply chain disruptions all had an impact on people's ability to access food.
