Abstract: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states that the excess amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, currently at a level of 425 parts per million (ppm), causes climate change. The high level of CO2 is due to the burning of fossil fuels over the past century.  Therefore, reducing fossil fuels use and shifting to more sustainable energy sources seem to be a sensible way to alleviate claimate change.  Such action is termed as energy transition.  And itrequires significant economic restructuring, a lengthy process, and leads to lifestyle changes and new waste management processses for handling different types of wastes.  Ensuring energy security while pursuing energy transition is a major challenge for many national governments.
