Indigenous Rights in Canada: Where Things Stand
In this Pub Talk, Professor Dwight Newman of the University of Saskatchewan will help those in attendance understand what’s going on with several major Indigenous rights topics today. The Cowichan case from Richmond has a lot of attention on Aboriginal title, and he’ll give a brief explanation and update on that case. The duty to consult doctrine continues to evolve, especially with developing expectations of free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC), and he’ll give a brief update on Canadian case law. And a major British Columbia case has the BC government thinking of changing its UNDRIP legislation – Professor Newman will talk about the BC and federal UNDRIP legislation and their potential implications. It’s a sort of one-stop event to learn about several major topics all in one go, so don’t miss out!
