University of Regina launches Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance

News Release Release Date: March 10, 2016 11:00 a.m.

The University of Regina officially celebrated the renaming of the Faculty of Fine Arts to the Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance today.

The name identifies the diversity of the Faculty in teaching, research, and creative and performance-based activities.

“This change reflects the tremendous evolution of new technologies in recent years, and the impact it is having on teaching, research and performance within the Faculty today,” said University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vianne Timmons. “The Faculty is home to dynamic programs and interdisciplinary research, and is a centre of innovation at our University.  Renaming it is an important way to describe this contemporary role more appropriately.”

The new name was developed through extensive meetings and consultations over the last year and was approved unanimously by the Faculty and by the University’s Senate.

“The former name speaks to disciplinary-specific practices such as theatre, filmmaking, and painting,” says Professor Rae Staseson, Dean of Media, Art, and Performance. “Although these are still vital components of our Faculty, the new name speaks to our state of the art equipment, collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches, and our innovative ways that transcend old-school boundaries.”

The Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in creative technologies, film, music, theatre, and visual arts as well as interdisciplinary programs.
