FGSR UR Scholars Entrance Scholarship

The intention of this scholarship is to support a thesis based, fully-qualified student who shows scholarly promise upon admission at the University of Regina.

Applications by students are not required or accepted to FGSR. Nominations for this award are made by each faculty, to FGSR.

All FGSR Funding is subject to annual budgetary approval and up to the discretion of the Dean of FGSR.

Eligibility

Qualifications: Holders of these awards are required to be a thesis based, fully-qualified
graduate student. This includes MAP’s – MFA & PhD Thesis Project (Research Creation) students.  

Awardees must also be an entering student (be in their first semester) in any
discipline, in a Master's or Doctoral degree program. Master’s & PhD students must have a
minimum of a first class average (equivalent to a minimum of 80% at the University of Regina)
when they enter their program and must show continued scholarly promise.

Citizenship: Awardees can be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, Landed Immigrant or
International student.

In Good Standing: Students must have a minimum 80% average coming into their graduate
program. An incomplete and/or failing grade from the previous semester's work will render the
student ineligible for support. Failure to continue to be fully eligible in each semester while
holding this scholarship, will require the scholarship to be discontinued.

Required: Grad Thrive Plus 800AA must be completed by the end of the first semester in which a student
begins their program in order to be eligible. Failure to complete this by the end of their
first semester will require the scholarship to be discontinued.

Registered Full-Time: Students are required to be registered full-time in each and every
semester in which the funding is to be received and accordingly, are required to register and
remain in no fewer than six credit hours each semester while holding the award (including
spring/summer semester). All awardees are required to be registered full-time by the fifth day of
the first month (January, May, or September) of the semesters in which the award is to be paid,
in order to meet payroll deadlines.

Renewable: This award may be renewable for a 2nd and 3rd year for a PhD student, and for a 2nd
year for a Masters student. Students must hold a minimum GPA of 85% in order to renew in
their second or third year and continue to be otherwise fully eligible.

Application Information

RATES OF SUPPORT:
Each UR Scholars Entrance Scholarship may cover full tuition and associated fees for up to 3
years for a PhD student and up to 2 years for a Masters student, provided they continue to be
fully eligible each semester while holding the award.
- There will be 2 PhD awards each year (1 International and 1 Domestic student).
- There will be 2 Masters awards each year (1 International and 1 Domestic student).

APPLICATION & PROCEDURES:
No application is required. Each Faculty may nominate 1 Masters and 1 PhD student to FGSR by
confirming full eligibility, as described in the Terms of Reference.

Faculties will then provide full details on an excel spreadsheet (template provided by FGSR), with
their fully eligible nominee and alternates in a RANKED order. Please include a list of ranked
alternates also, in the event the nominee is ineligible/cannot be awarded. Faculties must also provide a Nomination Letter addressing why the student is deserving of this award, specifically
speaking to the student’s academic record and research potential as a scholar.

Nominations will be requested by FGSR in early summer, so as to
include all potential incoming graduate students during the year.

NOTIFICATION & PAYMENTS:

FGSR will manage the final review, awarding, notification and payments of all UR Scholars Entrance Scholarship students. The successful awardees will be paid out directly to their student account, each semester while holding the award, to cover full tuition and associated fees.
