Introduction

This document describes the installation procedures for the Micro Focus (Novell) Client for Windows software.  This document also provides instructions for performing various system configuration tasks.

Supported Platforms

Installation of the Micro Focus Client for Windows is only recommended on platforms that are supported by Computing Services and by Micro Focus. Micro Focus does not support installation of the client on Windows Home Editions. As of this writing the supported operating system at the UofR is Windows 10 64 bit. The client may run on other unsupported platforms (e.g. Windows Vista). Although Windows 11 is not currently on the supported software list the client has been shown to run on that platform.

Overview of Micro Focus Client on Windows Computers

The Micro Focus client is a piece of software that is installed on Windows computers to allow real time access to campus Micro Focus based file and print servers. Users who desire access to the Micro Focus services from off site locations should also review technote 511.  Currently tested versions of the Micro Focus Client for Windows are maintained on \\softdist.cc.uregina.ca\dist. The Windows 10 client can be found in the "Applications\Windows\3 Novell Products\Novell Client" folder. Use the most recent one listed under that folder. Users who are having trouble obtaining files from \\softdist can also download the most recent version from the S: drive at S:\dist\win32\micro focus client\. The most recent version that has been tested for on campus use is "sp5ir2 (Client 2 SP5 IR2)".

Installation Prerequisites

  1. The installer should have a good working knowledge of the Windows operating system on which the client is being installed.
  2. The system should be in good working order.  Do not install the Micro Focus Client onto a computer that has been experiencing system problems.
  3. A network adaptor must be installed, tested, and configured to use the TCP/IP protocol.
  4. There must be at least 800 MB free hard drive space on Windows 10.
  5. You must have local administrative privileges.

Installing the Micro Focus Client for Windows on Windows 10.

For systems that already have an earlier version of the Micro Focus client installed.

  1. Login as usual
  2. Copy the latest folder from softdist to the local drive on the PC.   e.g. copy the contents of \\softdist.cc.uregina.ca\DIST\Applications\Windows\3 Novell Products\Novell Client\sp5ir2 (or a newer folder) to c:\urdistr\sp5ir2
  3. Open an administrative cmd prompt
  4. Go to the above folder. e.g. c:\urdistr\sp5ir2
  5. Type setup.exe /ACU and hit enter. This will install and configure the client and automatically reboot the machine.

For systems that do not have the Micro Focus client installed.

  3. In File Explorer right click on setup.exe and click Run as administrator. This will install and configure the client and automatically reboot the machine.

Uninstall of the Micro Focus Client for Windows 10

Uninstallation of the Micro Focus Client is straight forward:

  1. Log into the workstation as usual.
  2. From Programs and Features highlight the Client for Open Enterprise Server and click Uninstall. You will be asked for administrative credentials. Reboot when prompted.

Troubleshooting

  • If you are having difficulty installing the client from \\softdist, you may have to copy the Windows folder, down to the local PC and run it locally (as mentioned earlier).
  • NMAS:  Is used on Windows 10 (for upper/lower case destinction). If you follow these instructions then NMAS should be set up ok. NMAS can be uninstalled, if necessary, using "Programs and Features" from the control panel.

Configuring Systems for Management

Micro Focus ZENworks provides additional desktop management components which allow for workstation configuration, software distribution, and remote management.  It is highly desirable to install these services on university owned systems located on campus, as they provide a means with which to remotely and automatically perform workstation maintenance and support services that would otherwise require a technician to physically visit the system.  The install and configuration of  the ZENworks Desktop Management Agent is documented in technote 545.

Conclusion
The prerequisites and procedures for installing the Micro Focus Netware Client under Windows are described.
