University of Regina researchers receive Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSRHC) Insight Development Grants (IDG) worth $109,107
Dr. Shela Hirani, associate professor of nursing, received an IDG worth $68,500 for her project entitled, Parenting Challenges of Refugee Families during COVID19: A Critical Ethnographic Study. Her research will examine the parenting challenges of refugee families with children, identify how the COVID19 pandemic has affected parenting practices of refugee families, and seek their recommendation on supports needed to minimize these challenges and promote positive parenting experiences.
Dr. Omid Mirzaei, assistant professor in the economics department, received a $41,107 IDG for his project, Investigating First Nations Education Funding Gaps in Saskatchewan. This study proposes a new approach in federal-provincial comparisons of educational services which aims to rectify challenges raised from comparing aggregate average per student funding. The proposed approach will lead to a more accurate understanding of the actual per student funding level for First Nations children living on reserve. The results of this study can be used to inform the federal funding model for on-reserve education to better respond to the needs of First Nations children living on reserve.
