Decarbonizing transportation events being held at the U of R
The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science is presenting two events examining the efforts required to decarbonize our transportation systems to help mitigate the effects of climate change.
As the transportation sector accounts for around 25 per cent of Canada's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, electric vehicles (EV) and cleaner fuels will be key to decarbonizing our communities and society. While Canada has set a mandatory target for passenger vehicles to be zero-emission by 2035, less than six per cent of electric chargers in Canada are in the Prairie region, which makes EVs problematic for long trips. Furthermore, charging queuing and cold weather are major concerns for urban EV trips.
The U of R’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Assistant Professor Dr. Yili (Kelly) Tang’s seminar will address the growing challenges, strategies and future vision of electric vehicle development and will preview the issues that will be examined in more detail in the follow-up symposium.
Decarbonizing Transportation – Electric Vehicles: Challenges, Strategies and Emission Challenges Seminar
Date: Tuesday, May 16, 2023
Time: 1:15 – 2:30 p.m.
Location: ED 106.1, Education Building
University of Regina, Main Campus
Following this seminar the faculty will host a symposium on Decarbonizing Transportation in Southern Saskatchewan.
The migration of our society to a low carbon environment is key to mitigating climate change and to achieving the collective benefits for our communities, our environment, our economy and quality of life. It requires the deployment of technical solutions, establishment of supportive policies, development of financing programs and partnerships, and working across sectors of our society and economy.
The symposium will include presentations by experts from the University of Regina, Simon Fraser University, the cities of Coquitlam and Regina, SaskPower and the Saskatchewan Electric Vehicle Association. The goal of this symposium is to help move our world closer to a zero carbon future.

It is our responsibility to strengthen relationships with Indigenous communities to build a more inclusive future for all. Our three federated colleges, 10 faculties, 25 academic departments, and 18 research centres foster innovative research with practical and theoretical applications. We are committed to cultivating the potential of our 16,700 students and supporting their health and well-being. We take learning beyond the classroom through work and volunteer experiences to develop career-ready graduates.
