Glossary Term: Metadata
Definition:
information which is used to interpret the content in digital files, including:
- descriptive metadata (what the item is, how to interpret it, who created and/or maintained it over time)
- rights metadata (who owns the asset and has permission to modify it)
- technological metadata (the technological environment that is required to make the digital asset readable or usable)
- preservation metadata (describes what steps have been taken over time to ensure the digital asset remains complete, authentic, uncorrupted, and accessible)
