Student Profile: Gabriela Beltran, MPP’24

About Gabriela

 

Gabriela Beltran received a Master’s degree in Public Policy in 2024.

Prior to attending the University of Regina Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy, Gabriela completed a bachelor's degree in economics and worked for the Mexican government. During this period, she recognized the crucial role that public policies play in enhancing individuals' capacity to choose healthy behaviours and sustain their wellbeing. This experience inspired her to deepen her understanding of the public policy decision-making process. It was at this point that she realized her desire to pursue graduate studies to further her expertise in this field.

Her leadership in organizing the Youth Action for UN Climate Conference (COP28) event received a Recognition Award from the Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development – Saskatchewan.

Tell us about your research.

My research explored the role of municipal decision-making in the value of water and the impact of water policies on community wellbeing amidst the increasing frequency and intensity of droughts. I aimed to promote public policies that help communities better manage water challenges and improve their wellbeing, particularly in vulnerable areas. The master’s program in public policy improved my research skills and allowed me to focus on a specific area of public policy that can benefit society. Through my research, I highlighted the importance of social values in decision-making during droughts and the crucial role that city governments play in supporting community wellbeing.

What did you find most interesting about your research topic?

Water is fundamental to creating healthy and economically active communities. Understanding how water, society, the economy, and the environment are interconnected is crucial for developing ideas and perspectives that promote a more sustainable and collaborative community.

Tell us about your experience in Regina.

Overall, my time in Regina has greatly enhanced both my academic and research skills and contributed significantly to my personal growth. What I value most is the sense of community; being away from home has made me appreciate the supportive network around me. I have learned the importance of understanding different perspectives and am committed to using this knowledge to develop more equitable and inclusive policies that benefit everyone in society.

What advice would you give to a student considering studying here?

I highly recommend taking advantage of the diverse academic programs and the supportive community the university offers. The University provides an excellent environment for pursuing both academic and personal goals, with dedicated faculty and staff committed to helping students succeed. Additionally, Regina combines urban amenities with natural beauty that can enhance your academic experience. Be open to new experiences, get involved in campus activities, and build connections with fellow students and faculty. Overall, studying at the University of Regina is a rewarding experience that prepares you for your future endeavours.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I am inspired by the opportunity to make a meaningful impact and help people through my work. My inspiration also comes from the incredible women I am fortunate to be surrounded by who embody strength, wisdom, and perseverance. They encourage me to push limits, chase goals, and make a positive impact on the world.

What are your future plans?

In the future, I plan to deepen my expertise in public policy, with a particular focus on health, water, and climate change adaptation. I want to help develop effective and sustainable policies that improve community wellbeing, especially in vulnerable areas. My goal is to collaborate with government agencies, NGOs, and local communities to make a positive impact on society.

Anything else you would like to share? 

I am passionate about learning and exploring new cultures, perspectives, and ideas. I believe that being aware of differences and respecting diversity is the foundation for creating better policies that can address current social problems. This belief is based on my own experiences gained from studying in multicultural environments. During my formative years, I was fortunate enough to live in different countries and experience the unique cultures they each had to offer. Such experiences have strengthened my desire to further my education in international environments so that I can continue learning and deepening my understanding of the global community. Through my experiences as an international student in Brazil, Malta, and Canada, I have gained invaluable insight into different cultures, allowing me to develop an open-mind and adaptive mindset that has fostered my personal growth and development.
