Student Spotlight- January 2011

Shane

Who are you and where are you from?

Hello, my name is Shane Keepness, I am 20 years old and a proud member of the Muscowpetung First Nation located north of Regina.

What are you studying?

I am heading into my 3rd year in the pre-dentistry program. However, since I have completed my two pre-dentistry year requirements, I am now trying to get a degree in Environmental Health and Applied Science, in addition to a certificate in Indigenous Health.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Once I have my degree, and certificate, I will either apply to a national dentistry school, or work exclusively within First Nation health areas in Saskatchewan. My degree will allow me to become a variety of things, such as an environmental health officer, public health inspector, work in environmental related areas, and work in First Nation health related areas – I am hoping I am along these lines in 5 years.

What makes you successful academically?

Being a First Nations student, I feel that one of the keys to success is maintaining an alcohol and drug free healthy lifestyle, which is why I choose not to affiliate myself with either of these. I feel that so far on my educational journey, one of the things that keeps me motivated is letting my family/community know what I am doing; you will be surprised on how much people are supporting you! I also feel that perseverance is a valuable asset when becoming a student, no matter how hard the assignment, or midterm –- never give up!

What would be your message to those following in your footsteps?

I would say: get involved in a field that you love, never be afraid to fail, and always rise to the challenges. I like the saying, “you’re only as good as what you come up against”. Never be afraid to ask for help, there are a lot of good programs out there to help students in any class, and situation. Also, get involved in whatever you can. The door is open for us First Nations students; all we got to do is walk in!
