Student Spotlight- October 2011

Jenel

Who are you and where are you from?

My name is Jenel Markwart and I am from Prince Albert, Sk.

What are you studying?

I am studying Education via SUNTEP.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I see myself teaching in a school here in Regina, or teaching on a Reserve in British Columbia. I see myself passing on Métis and Aboriginal culture and helping Aboriginal students feel proud of their culture.

What makes you successful academically?

The wonderful support from my peers and staff at SUNTEP, my hard work and organization skills, and my determination to reach my goals.

What is/was your summer job? How did it help you with your educational goals?

This past summer I worked at FCC in the Diversity Division. This summer job helped me explore the option of doing a business degree. After spending the summer in a business like atmosphere, it confirmed that teaching is where I want to be; it helped me realize that I am going down the right path. It also helped me practice my French, which will be a useful skill when I am searching for a job, and it helped me develop my computer skills which will help me in my university classes. I also met some great people who support me and my academic goals.

What would be your message to those following in your footsteps?

Be willing to explore summer jobs that aren’t in your field of study. It can either confirm that you are in the right place in your life, or it will open up new options and opportunities for you.
