Student Spotlight- September 2011

Alison

Who are you and where are you from?

My name is Alison Kimbley, born and raised in Regina.

What did you study?

At the University I took my degree in Education through the SUNTEP program (Saskatchewan Urban Native Teaching Education Program).

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I see myself as a leader in the Aboriginal community, working closely with community- based organizations as well as mentoring and supporting initiatives to profile Aboriginal youth. In five years I may be completing post graduate studies.

What made you successful academically?

To be academically successful I led a balanced life, yet retained a focus on my goals. It is necessary to be well organized and prepared. Planning in advance will ensure that you are not overwhelmed by last minute pressure, you have flexibility for unexpected opportunities and more importantly you have time to fully consider the assignment.

What would be your message to those following in your footsteps?

The advice that I would give future U of R students is to be involved, get to know a range of other students, connect with interest groups on campus and engage with professors. Take advantage of the opportunities and the services available, attend events, go to the fitness center, and support the sports teams.
