Location: ED 114

Apostolos Kantzas Apostolos Kantzas PhD (Waterloo), P. Eng. is a Professor at the University of Calgary, and holder of the Energi Simulation Industrial Research Chair in Energy Transition. He is the Director of the Energi Simulation Centre for Geothermal Systems Research. He leads research that is related to problems of flow through porous media, enhanced oil recovery, geothermal energy, carbon storage, soil remediation, reactor design, magnetic resonance applications and tomographic imaging. He has supervised over 210 graduate students and PDFs. Apostolos is a member of APEGA, SPE, CSChE, AIChE, CWLS and SCA. He has authored or co-authored over 515 technical papers, 37 patents and over 500 technical reports. Apostolos is also the President and CEO of PERM Inc.

ABSTRACT

This seminar is two-fold. In the first part, a high-level overview of the Energi Simulation Industrial Research in Energy Transition (one of 13 chairs around the globe) will be presented. Current research projects and future directions will be highlighted with the aim of identifying possible areas of collaboration between the Chair and the Researchers in the University of Regina. Projects evolve around heavy oil and bitumen EOR, electroacoustics, heat transfer mass transfer and geothermal applications. In the second part of the presentation, which will be much more heavy oil forward, there will be a discussion around some fundamental questions related to fluid mechanics and how they apply in heavy oil EOR.
