Industrial Systems Engineering
What is Industrial Systems Engineering?
The Industrial Systems Engineer becomes an engineering generalist with specialized training in the nature, behaviour, control, and monitoring of engineering systems. The ISE program is designed to train engineers to organize and effectively utilize the total resources of modern manufacturing and process industries: materials, machinery, facilities, people, and capital.
We offer dynamic undergraduate and graduate programs that integrate strong academic foundations with hands-on experience. Undergraduate students benefit from extensive lab work led by full-time instructors and enjoy small class sizes—typically 10 to 30 in upper years—for a personalized learning experience. Co-operative education and internships provide practical industry exposure. Graduate students in MEng, MSc, and PhD programs have access to advanced research facilities, positioning them to lead in innovative, real-world solutions within their fields.

Key research areas include:
- Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Greenhouse Gas Control
Development of advanced technologies for CO₂ capture from industrial processes, including post-/pre-combustion methods, spray columns, and catalytic utilization. - Sustainable and Renewable Energy Systems
Research on biodiesel, biofuels, wind and solar power integration, cogeneration systems, and energy recovery from biomass, municipal waste, and agricultural residues. - Process Modeling, Simulation, and Optimization
Advanced simulation and modeling of gas treatment, chemical reactions, and energy systems to improve efficiency, safety, and sustainability. - Advanced Manufacturing and Materials
3D printing, Design for additive manufacturing, hybrid manufacturing, smart materials, nanocomposites, and catalytic materials for clean energy and structural applications. - Environmental and Water Engineering
Sustainable water treatment, desalination, environmental risk assessment, and community-focused solutions for water and climate resilience. - Structural Integrity and Materials Characterization
Finite element analysis, fracture mechanics, welding, and durability studies under extreme conditions (high temperature, pressure, and cyclic loading). - Noise, Vibration, and Acoustics
Control of industrial and environmental noise, vibration analysis, and the use of acoustic design for infrastructure and energy systems. - Circular Economy and Sustainable Infrastructure
Systems-level strategies for infrastructure resilience, net-zero transitions, and integration of environmental and economic sustainability. - Supply Chain, Operations, and Decision-Making
Data-driven decision-making, optimization in engineering operations, and resilient supply chain management for industrial and public systems. - Biotechnology and Polymer EngineeringBioprocessing, protein/cell technologies, and polymer thermodynamics and transport for applications in energy, health, and materials science.

Engineering Research Excellence Award Recipient
Dr. Sharfuddin Khan received our Faculty award for research excellence this year. Dr. Khan holds an NSERC Discovery Grant entitled, Knowledge-based decision support system for overall supply chain resilience performance evaluation, awarded in April 2024.
ISE faculty are leaders in advancing industrial and manufacturing systems, recognized with prestigious awards such as the Faculty Research Excellence Award and inclusion among the world’s top 2% scientists. Their highly cited research impacts fields ranging from supply chain performance to advanced and sustainable manufacturing.

UofR President’s Award for Teaching Excellence 2023
Dr. David deMontigny recieved the UofR President’s Service Excellence Award in 2023 for his administrative service as Associate Dean Academic as well as leading the Faculty through their successful national accreditation of all five programs under the new outcomes based assessment model.
The President’s Service Excellence Award is awarded to individuals who consistently go above and beyond expectaions at the University of Regina and/or its Federated Colleges.
