Art for Lunch: Audrey Dreaver
Please join the Department of Visual Arts this Friday for Art for Lunch. We are very happy to welcome Audrey Dreaver, Assistant Professor, First Nations University of Canada.
Audrey Dreaver is a nehiywak (Plains Cree) artist, curator, instructor, and Indigenous art historian. She is currently Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator in the Indigenous Fine Arts department at First Nations University of Canada where she teaches Indigenous art histories of the Americas, studio arts, and historical techniques. Her work focuses on the importance of valuing the connection of art and community as a means of individual and collective empowerment. She believes art is an integral component of life, especially within Indigenous communities, and that exploring art’s incorporation of advanced knowledge systems contributes to healing, strengthening, and educating Indigenous peoples and society as a whole. The Indigenous art that existed in the Americas before European contact placed art and artists in the forefront of our cultures.
For some time, Audrey has been exploring the philosophical framework of the triad of myth and its role in the meaning of space, place, and existence as it relates to herself and her work. Her examination as an academic, artist, and nehiyiwak (nay-he-a-walk) grandmother continually intersect at points of “origin” which often become the metaphors defining her continued exploration of ancestral Indigenous knowledges across the Americas.
