Reshaping Government with Kevin G. Lynch and James Mitchell

Join JSGS and URPress for a thought-provoking conversation with authors Kevin Lynch and Jim Mitchell for their topical book, listed for both the prestigious Donner Prize and the Dafoe Award, A New Blueprint for Government!

In this compelling book, the authors explore how Canada’s public institutions can evolve to meet the complex challenges of modern governance. Hear their insights, ask questions, and be part of a lively discussion on the future of public policy and leadership.

It has been less than a year and a half since Mark Carney was elected Prime Minister, less than two years since Donald Trump assumed the presidency, and a year since we published our book – A New Blueprint for Government. During this time, PM Carney has totally reversed most of the signature policies of the Trudeau government and, unexpectedly, become the global leader of the Trump resistance. Trump has set new lows for how disruptive, dangerous and dumb his presidency would be.

And our book? It called for a new policy direction focussing on productivity and growth, feared that Trump 2.0 would be a disruptive challenge for everyone, and identified needed reforms in defence, security, and national policing. Its main theme was that successfully implementing Carney’s agenda requires tackling governing imbalances, such as extraordinary centralization in the PMO, that have hobbled governments for some time.

The question to be discussed on November 4 is: ‘How is Prime Minister Carney doing in reshaping government?’ Execution will determine the success of Carney’s transformation agenda, and that requires government operating at its very best.

Copies of A New Blueprint for Government will be available for purchase. Light refreshments will be served.
