2019 Community Connections Tour of Northern Saskatchewan

Media Advisory Release Date: September 16, 2019 2:00 p.m.

Dr. Vianne Timmons, University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor, along with several senior University officials, will be visiting a number of northern communities from September 18 – 20, 2019, as part of the University’s 11th annual Community Connections Tour.

“The University of Regina, as a provincial institution, is interested in listening to and learning from communities and officials from across the province,” said Timmons. “The University’s 2015-20 Strategic Plan: peyak aski kikawinaw – Together We Are Stronger informs the intent of these visits, which is to discuss opportunities for deepening the University’s relationship with our communities and understanding how we can best meet their post-secondary educational needs.”

This year’s northern tour includes meetings with community and school leaders:

  • September 18 - Birch Narrows Dene Nation and Clearwater River Dene Nation
  • September 19 - Flying Dust First Nation/Meadow Lake Tribal Council and Meadow Lake
  • September 20 – Wollaston Lake and La Ronge

During her tenure as President of the University, Timmons has visited communities ranging from Uranium City to Yorkton; Cumberland House to Maple Creek. In some cases, these visits have led to community partnerships that in turn have helped create remote learning programs and other education initiatives.

Media are invited to speak with Timmons prior to her departure. She is available in the afternoon of September 17, in Regina. Other on-site media availabilities during the tour include: September 19, 9:30 a.m. at Flying Dust Cree Nation near Meadow Lake, and on September 20, at 10:45 a.m. at Northlands College in La Ronge.
