Five extraordinary U of R alumni to be honoured at 2017 Alumni Crowning Achievement Awards

From the Outstanding Young Alumni Award recipient (Thomas Benjoe) to the Lifetime Achievement Award recipient (Guy Vanderhaeghe), the University of Regina’s annual Alumni Crowning Achievement Awards celebrates alumni who continue to make important contributions in Saskatchewan and around the world.

When:              Thursday, October 5, 2017  Reception: 5:30 p.m.  Program: 6:15 p.m.

Where:             Hotel Saskatchewan, 2125 Victoria Avenue

Note to Media: Award recipients are available for media interviews at 1:00 p.m. at College West, Room 215, and at 5:30 p.m. in the Library, Hotel Saskatchewan.  

The Outstanding Young Alumni Award will go to Thomas Benjoe CA'09, CHTGEM'09, DAdmin'09, BBA'11 (FNUniv). As the CEO and president of the multi-million-dollar First Nations-owned corporation FHQ Developments Ltd., Benjoe works to create employment and contributes to community economic development. He was born and raised in Muscowpetung First Nation Saskatchewan and received his education at the First Nations University of Canada at the University of Regina.

The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Guy Vanderhaeghe BEd'78. Vanderhaeghe is best known for his trilogy of award-winning literary westerns. His honours include three Governor General Awards for Literature, a Faber Prize in Britain, the Lieutenant-Governor’s Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts, and the Order of Canada.     

The other awards and recipients at this year’s celebration are:

  • Dr. Robert & Norma Ferguson Award for Outstanding Service, Dr. Margaret Dagenais BSc’71, CVTED’87, BVTED'91, MEd'97, PhD'11.
  • Award for Distinguished Humanitarian & Community Service, Dr. Joan Halmo BA'77 (Campion) with great distinction.  
  • Award for Distinguished Professional Achievement, Dr. Greg Krätzig BAHons'04 (Campion), MA'06, PhD'16.
