Colourful Campus House: a place U of R’s 2LGBTQI+ students can call home

News Release Release Date: July 3, 2018 10:30 a.m.

UR Pride Centre and the University of Regina have announced the Colourful Campus House 2LGBTQI+ student housing initiative that will begin in fall 2018.

The University of Regina has allocated two six-bedroom apartment-style residences in the newly renovated College West building to UR Pride Centre’s Colourful Campus House initiative. In partnership with the University, UR Pride is confident these residences will soon be home for 2LGBTQI+, and allied students at the University of Regina.

“The need is real and research tells us that 2LGBTQI+ university students experience many difficulties within residence halls ranging from homophobic roommates to a lack of understanding of 2LGBTQI+ issues by their residence assistants,” says Jacq Brasseur, Executive Director of UR Pride. “Gender and sexually diverse students on our campus have shared with us that concerns about homophobia & transphobia, and a lack of positive spaces definitely impact their ability to safely access student housing.”

In addition to offering students the opportunity to apply for one of the 12 vacancies, the University of Regina is also encouraging 2LGBTQI+ and allied students to apply for a housing award to help subsidize the cost of living on campus.

“When UR Pride shared with us the statistics showing the extent to which many 2LGBTQI+ young people have to navigate poverty and housing insecurity, the Colourful Campus House initiative just made sense,” explains Ben Slowski, Manager, Housing Services at the University of Regina.

Students interested in applying for a residence spot in Colourful Campus House are invited to contact Housing Services at 306-585-5281, UR Pride at 306-586-8811 ext. 207 or
