Make a difference

"I am grateful for the opportunity to study at the University of Regina and the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public policy for several reasons. One main reason is the commitment of professors to develop students' critical thinking skills to help solve real-world problems. During my research, I received scholarships from the U of R, a platform to communicate my research to a large audience, as well as excellent supervision and mentorship from my supervisor, Dr. Cheryl Camillo, and others."

Doing my PhD in the MAP program has been a really wonderful experience. My supervisor, Dr. Sherry Farrell-Racette, has been very supportive and very helpful in helping me refine my research and to also begin working more in my practice, which is visual art and mixed media art.

Outstanding Supervision

Before you start your research or project hours, perhaps even before you have started your program, you will choose a supervisor (and possibly a co-supervisor). Student-supervisor relationships vary greatly. Working with your supervisor can be rewarding or challenging, formal or personal, and it may be co-operative or even frustrating. It is important to select a supervisor who you respect, and your supervisor must be someone with whom you can work.

University of Regina biologist Dr. Mark Brigham was awarded the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies 2022 Dr. Suning Wang Award for Outstanding Graduate Mentorship.

Entrance Requirements

Normally, applicants must have obtained a thesis-based Master's degree in the discipline to qualify as a doctoral student. Applicants must have academic credentials consistent with being fully-qualified to undertake graduate work at the doctoral level. The categories of probationary or qualifying student do not apply at the doctoral level.

A comprehensive examination or equivalent is not a formal requirement of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, but may be required by individual academic units.

Admission Process

The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research has established a list of steps that will guide you through the admission process.

Funding Options

The University of Regina offers and administers many scholarships and awards that provide financial help to our students. Once you have been accepted as a fully-qualified graduate student with no conditions or holds on your admission, then you are eligible to apply for our scholarships, awards or graduate teaching assistant positions.

The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research has created an online graduate scholarship application system, the Graduate Awards Portal (GAP). GAP allows you to view all of the scholarships, awards, bursaries, fellowships and prizes that the University of Regina offers our graduate students. You can apply for awards online, as well as monitor and track the status of your scholarship application.
