Strengthening Community, Together
Every year, tens of thousands of people walk through the doors of the Al Ritchie Community Association looking for support, connection, recreation, or simply a welcoming place to belong.
Last year alone, more than 55,000 people accessed the Association's programs and services. During that time, Al Ritchie distributed more than 125,000 pounds of food and 119,000 pounds of clothing—providing nearly $1.9 million worth of essential support to individuals and families across Regina.
It was this remarkable community impact that faculty and staff from the Hill Levene School of Business at the University of Regina experienced firsthand during the School's recent Community Day, where they volunteered alongside the Al Ritchie team in support of an organization making a meaningful difference every day.
Everybody needs to be served with dignity," says Denis Simard, Executive Director of the Al Ritchie Community Association. "We're really proud of what we do."
That simple philosophy is reflected in everything the Association offers.
While many people know Al Ritchie for its food and clothing programs, those services are only one part of its story. The Association is also a vibrant community hub, offering programs that bring people of all ages together, from wellness programs for families with young children and after-school activities to summer camps, youth programming, chair yoga, tai chi, and one of Regina's largest pickleball communities for older adults.
93 per cent of the Association's programs are offered at no cost, ensuring they remain accessible to everyone.
Throughout the year, Al Ritchie also creates opportunities for families to celebrate life's important moments together. Community events around Halloween, Christmas, and back-to-school help ensure children and families can participate in experiences many take for granted.
Last year, for example, the Association provided approximately 150 free Halloween costumes, allowing children to celebrate alongside their friends.
It's about making sure people have the opportunity to experience normal moments," says Simard. "Whether it's putting on a Halloween costume, joining a summer camp, or participating in a wellness program, those experiences matter."
For the Hill Levene faculty and staff who volunteered during Community Day, spending time at Al Ritchie was an opportunity to see firsthand how community organizations strengthen the social fabric of Regina. The day reflected the School's commitment to community engagement and creating positive societal impact through meaningful partnerships. "
"Community Day gave us an opportunity to step outside the office and connect with an organization that's making a real difference in Regina," said Christina Tathibana, Manager of Strategic Projects & Accreditation at the Hill Levene School of Business. "It was a meaningful experience, and I'm grateful we could be part of it."
Instructor Romulus Cismaru said the experience reinforced the importance of collective action in building stronger communities.
"This day reminded me community isn't built by one organization alone," he said. "It is created by people who show up, work together, help one another, and offer understanding and support. Al Ritchie is fostering that kind of community every day. I am grateful for the opportunity to volunteer because it gave me a new perspective and a deeper appreciation for the impact that collective care and connection can have."
"Community engagement is an important part of who we are as a School. Supporting organizations like Al Ritchie reminds us that strong communities are built through collaboration, compassion, and a shared commitment to making a difference." — Dr. Erin Oldford, Dean, Hill Levene School of Business
While Community Day has come to an end, the opportunity to support Al Ritchie's work continues.
On August 29, the Association will host Rock the Ritchie, its signature annual fundraiser. The event will bring together families, local musicians, businesses, volunteers, and community members for a day of family activities followed by an evening celebrating local music—all while raising funds to support the programs and services that thousands of Regina residents rely on each year.
Rock the Ritchie is more than a fundraiser, it's a celebration of community and an opportunity for individuals, families, businesses, and volunteers to support the Al Ritchie Community Association's important work. In the video below, Executive Director Denis Simard shares what makes the event so special and how everyone can play a role in strengthening our community.
