Student Spotlights

University of Regina students Shaira Castillo (pictured below), Calvin Hui (pictured left), and Sydney Wszolek are often in the midst of the hustle and bustle on campus, cameras in hand. They are photographers for the Creative Media Team (CMT), shooting occasions such as University receptions, research conferences, and Cougars and Rams competitions including the exciting Mitchell Bowl in November 2024.

About Us

The Creative Media Team (CMT) is responsible for producing the Canada West TV broadcasts for all Cougars varsity sport home games, as well as other campus wide media products, including all U of R convocation ceremonies. Our team – which is entirely student driven – offers photography, videography, and live event production services. Students are paid for their work and there are also opportunities for coop work placements and post-graduate internships.

The team started in 2017, with around 10 members and was initially only responsible for broadcasts. Now, a team of over 20 students work in a variety of roles, including videographers, photographers, camera operators, replay operators, and directors. We are always looking for students with interests in all areas of media production.

Students run the broadcasts in our state-of-the-art sport broadcast studio. They also manage the Story Lab, our production studio. Here, we produce video podcasts for departments across campus, as well as host both photo and video shoots. The CMT provides students with not just a paid work opportunity but also gives them relevant work experience during their time in school. Alumni have gone on to work for companies such as the CBC and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies offers two hands-on classes that work closely with the CMT. Podcasting and Dynamic Storytelling (SRS 133) is taught in the Story Lab, and students learn all aspects of video podcast production while developing storytelling skills. In Live Event Production and Sport Communication (SRS 132), students learn technical skills in all areas of sport media, while working on live Canada West TV broadcasts.
