Skill Levels

A1 Beginner

At the A1 level, you will be able to:

  • Understand and use familiar everyday expressions.
  • Use simple statements related to daily needs.
  • Introduce yourself and engage with others.
  • Ask and answer basic questions about topics such as place of residence, family, and more.
  • Participate in simple conversations, provided the other person speaks slowly, clearly, and cooperatively.

Requirements

  • Level A1 is intended for adults 18 and over with a minimal knowledge of French.
  • If you already have some knowledge of French, you must take an oral placement test. If you have no knowledge of French, you will automatically be placed in level A1.

A2 Upper Beginner

Specifically, the A2 level will allow you to:

  • understand and use common expressions and vocabulary appropriate to everyday situations (simple personal and family information, shopping, surrounding environment, work, etc.);
  • communicate during simple regular tasks requiring only a simple direct exchange of information on familiar topics;
  • describe in simple terms your education, surrounding environment;
  • express yourself on topics related to immediate needs.

Requirements

  • Level A2 is intended for adults 18 and over with a good basic knowledge of French who have mastered the vocabulary of the beginner level and/or adults who have completed level A1.
  • If you already have some knowledge of French but have never taken a course at La Cité, you will be required to take a placement test to enrol in this level.

B1 Intermediate

Specifically, the B1 level will allow you to:

  • understand the main points on familiar matters regularly encountered;
  • deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling;
  • produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest;
  • describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions, and briefly give reasons for opinions and plans.

Requirements

The B1 level is intended for adults, aged 18 and up, who have a basic knowledge of French and/or who have completed the A2 level.

Those who have never taken a French course with La Cité will have to pass an oral placement test.

B2 Upper Intermediate

Specifically, the B2 level will allow you to:

  • understand concepts related to concrete or abstract topics in a complex text;
  • understand a more specific discussion related to a specialized topic;
  • communicate with a good degree of spontaneity and ease as would be possible when conversing with a native speaker;
  • express yourself clearly and in detail on a wide range of subjects;
  • express an opinion on a current event and to set out the advantages and disadvantages of various situations.

Requirements

  • Level B2 is intended for adults 18 and over who have a very good basic knowledge of French and an intermediate comprehension level and/or who have completed level B1.
  • If you already have some knowledge of French but have never taken a course at La Cité, you will be required to take a placement test to enrol in this level.

C1 Advanced

Specifically, the C1 level will allow you to:

  • understand long demanding texts (academic literature, journal articles, etc.);
  • pick up on nuances and implicit meanings;
  • express yourself spontaneously and fluently without searching too hard for words;
  • use vocabulary in an effective and varied way in your social, professional or academic life;
  • express yourself on complex topics in a clear and well-structured way;
  • demonstrate your mastery of tools of organization, articulation and speech cohesion.

Requirements

  • Level C1 is intended for adults 18 and over who have strong French comprehension skills and a considerable vocabulary and/or adults who have completed level B2.
  • If you already have some knowledge of French but have never taken a course at La Cité, you will be required to take a placement test to enrol in this level.
