Jonathan Seinen (he/him) is an award-winning settler theatre artist and is an Assistant Professor of Theatre at the University of Regina on Treaty 4 Territory. Prior to his appointment to the University of Regina, he worked as Assistant Professor of Directing at SUNY Buffalo State University. He is co-founder of Architect Theatre, Saga Collectif, Boys In Chairs Collective, and was Associate Artist with lemonTree creations (2008-2017). His current research looks at devised theatre, new play development, and the craft of theatre directing.
Recent theatre credits include directing Boys In Chairs Collective’s Access Me (Aki Studio, Toronto; Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Direction), Jonathan Mourant’s Sycophant (National Theatre School), Iphigenia and the Furies (On Taurian Land) by Jeff Ho (Theatre Passe Muraille/Saga Collectif/Architect Theatre), for which he received a Dora Award Nomination, and Saga Collectif’s Black Boys (Buddies In Times Theatre). Directing at the University of Regina includes Orlando and Family, Fairies, Wishes and War: A Showcase of Short Plays. He also works as an actor, most recently appearing in Ekstatika Stage & Screen’s production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at Regina’s Artesian on 13th. Publications include Charisma Furs (Co-created with Katie Sly) in the LAMBDA Literary Award-nominated anthology Q2Q: Queer Canadian Performance Texts (Playwrights Canada Press).
Jonathan was awarded the 2020 John Hirsch Prize for Directing from the Canada Council for the Arts. He studied Drama at the University of Alberta and Acting at the National Theatre School of Canada before completing his MFA in Theatre Directing at Columbia University, where he worked with Anne Bogart and Brian Kulick. jonathanseinen.com
