Dr. Florence Luhanga is a Registered Nurse and Full Professor in the Faculty of Nursing (FON), at the University of Regina. She completed her Registered Nursing and Midwifery program in Malawi, her Bachelor of Education (Nursing Education) and Master of Education in nursing education from the University of Botswana, and her PhD in Nursing at the University of Alberta. Prior to joining the University of Regina (U of R) in 2011, Dr. Luhanga worked as a Registered Nurse/Midwife in Malawi, a lecturer at the Institute of Health Sciences in Botswana, a sessional instructor at the University of Alberta, and as an Assistant Professor at Laurentian University (2006-2011) where she maintained an active program of research while teaching nursing courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Dr. Luhanga’s research expertise is in qualitative research methodologies specifically grounded theory, focused ethnography, exploratory descriptive design, and participatory action research. Her research has been primarily in the field “teaching and unsafe student clinical behaviours”. In her doctoral dissertation at the University of Alberta, Dr. Luhanga investigated challenges field teachers encounter when teaching students who display unsafe performance in the clinical setting. Since then, she has served in the role of Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-PI on various local, provincial, and Tri-council funded research projects.

Dr. Luhanga has been involved in a federal grant funded project (SSHRC IDG), entitled “Experiences of racialized students in education, nursing, and social work.” She has been the PI on two multidisciplinary (Education, Nursing, and Social Work) research projects exploring the issue of “failure to fail” of unsafe or underperforming students in professional programs. She has also explored evidence related to clinical teaching models currently being used in nursing education and other health-related professional programs from a patient safety perspective. Furthermore, Dr. Luhanga has been involved in U of R President’s Seed Grant project, exploring experiences of Black faculty members in academia.

Dr. Luhanga has been a PI on a Mitacs Accelerate-funded project exploring public perceptions about paramedic care in Saskatchewan, working with research team members from the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics and Saskatchewan Polytechnic and supervised a post-doctoral fellow.

More recently Dr. Luhanga has been the PI of two funded (U of R and SSHRC IG) research projects exploring the experiences of Black students in undergraduate nursing programs in a Western Canadian province. She is also a Co-applicant on several research projects including, SSHRC Partnership Development Grant, “Partnership to strengthen older racialized immigrants’ social connectedness in Canada: The impacts of the living environment; a transnational project, “Older Adults’ Perception of Vulnerability and Inequality in Recovering from the Pandemic.” Dr. Luhanga has presented her research findings at several peer reviewed conferences locally, provincially, nationally and internationally. She has published about 40 articles in peer reviewed journals (17 as first author).

Regarding administration, Dr. Luhanga has served as an Interim Associate Dean Graduate Studies and Research (October 2021-December 2023) in the FON at the U of R, and the first BIPOC Nursing Student Liaison in the Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing program (January 2026 August 2026). She has served on different committees in the Faculty of Nursing, at the university, and the community level. Dr. Luhanga is recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal, and a Regional Board of Director, Western province of Pan-Canadian Association for Nurses of African Descent (PCANAD).
