Supported Hardware, Software and Related Products

Introduction

This policy provides the University community with a list of products that Information Services supports, including hardware, software and mobile devices. Furthermore, a list of recommended products is provided which Information Services is not yet able to fully support but which are expected to operate correctly in our environment. And finally, a list of products which have come to their end of life and are no longer supported is available under Related Information.

Policy

Information Services provides technical support for a variety, but not all, available products to enable the University community to carry out its day-to-day business.

While Information Services strives to ensure that the Macintosh products and products for Macintosh contained within this list are compatible with other University supported systems and software, operation and support levels identical to the more commonly used Windows platform and software are not guaranteed.

Hardware

System Units

  • Evergreen Computer Systems – see OPS-080-010 Personal Computer Allocations (Evergreen Program)
  • Apple iMac (not supported for use with Caspur Reporting or native Content 7 client, GroupWise access via web client or native Mail/Calendar/Contacts) Note that Information Services is not authorized Apple repair depot and so cannot perform most repairs.
  • Dell, Hewlett Packard (HP). Note that Information Services is not an authorized HP repair depot - repairs are provided by HP.

  • Apple Macbooks (not supported for use with Caspur Reporting) Note that Information Services is not an authorized Apple repair depot and so cannot perform most repairs.

Products Deemed at End of Life

Products that have been deemed at end of life are no longer supported by Information Services. See Products Deemed at End of Life (32 KB) PDF.

Mobile Devices

Supported mobile devices are verified in the University environment to provide:

  • interoperability with the GroupWise calendar and e-mail system;
  • connectivity to the campus wireless network; and
  • compatibility with Duo multi-factor authentication apps.

While some devices may be capable of other functions, Information Services cannot provide assurance that additional functionality will operate correctly in the University environment.

iOS/iPadOS

  • Only devices compatible with the two most recent versions of iOS/iPadOS will be supported

Android Based Smartphones and Tablets

  • Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets using the two most recent versions of Android OS
  • Google phones using the two most recent versions of Android OS
  • Blackberry phones using the two most recent versions of Android OS (end of support August 31, 2022)

Recommended Products

Recommended products have been tested by Information Services and found to provide useful functionality to a wide audience. They are not fully supported due to a number of possible reasons, including lack of vendor support to guarantee problems are fixed or lack of time for full integration testing on an ongoing basis. By using recommended products you are more likely to get prompt answers to questions and if you do need technical support you will be charged the supported rate instead of the unsupported rate.

Password Managers

  • KeePass Password Safe (Free but requires more effort/techinical know-how to set up/synchronize passwords.)
  • Lastpass (Paid personal verison is very easy to use and synchronize across devices.)

Webcams

  • Logitech PTZ PRO (for full room installations)
  • Logitech C930e (for use with desktop and other computers)

AV Equipment

  • Control, System and Routing: Extron must be specified for all fixed installation venues
  • Projectors: NEC and Panasonic for fixed installation venues
  • TVs: NEC commercial, Sharp commercial and Sony
  • TV wall mounts: Peerless, Chief and Middle Atlantic
  • Projector mounts: Chief and some Peerless components
  • Wireless microphones: Sennheiser for main campus and Shure for College Avenue campus

Consequences for Noncompliance

Members of the University community who use products that are not included in this policy are not assured support from Information Services will be available. Any work done by Information Services staff on unsupported products will be charged at the then established unsupported labour rate.
