Reassessment of Grades
Requesting a Reassessment of Grade
A student may request a reassessment of grade while the course is in progress, for a specific piece of course work, or when the course is completed. Reassessments may be procedural or substantive, as outlined below.
Deadline for requesting a Reassessment of Grade
For both procedural and substantive reassessments, students must submit their request within 20 business days of receiving the grade for a specific piece of course work.
For final grades, the request must be submitted within 20 business days of the final grade being posted to their UR Self-Service account.
For more information, refer to the Student Code of Conduct and Right to Appeal – Reassessment of Grade section in the Undergraduate Calendar.
Prodedural Reassessment of Grade
A procedural reassessment of grade is requested when a student believes that there has been an error in the calculation of their grade.
To initiate a procedural reassessment, the student will contact the course instructor and request a review of the grade calculation.
Substantive Reassessment of Grade
A substantive reassessment of grade is requested when a student believes that:
- a grade to course work was assigned on some basis other than academic achievement; or
- the published evaluation standards differ from the evaluation standards applied to the assigned grade.
The process begins with an informal discussion between the student and the course instructor. This informal discussion may help to resolve any misunderstandings about the grade as well as help clarify how the grade was determined.
If a student is not satisfied with the outcome of the informal discussion, they may submit a formal reassessment of grade request to the Registrar’s Office.
The following must be submitted before the substative reassessment will be processed:
- a completed Reassessment of Grade(s) Request form;
- a letter specifying the grounds for the reassessment and the date of the informal discussion with the instructor;
- the original (graded) copy of the course work; and
- the required fee.
A reassessment of a grade has three potential outcomes:
- the grade remains the same;
- the grade is raised; or
- the grade is lowered.
