Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI)
CFI is the Canadian federal funding agency that invests in state-of-the-art infrastructure that enables world-class research. Applications for further support can be made to Innovation Saskatchewan’s Innovation and Science Fund.
This funding stream supports the research infrastructure required for the very best researchers to undertake leading-edge research. It enables institutions to remain internationally competitive in areas of research and technology development aligned with their strategic priorities.
A formal internal process for John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF) identifies projects that can move forward to the external CFI application. This internal call is announced through the UofR Research email list service, as well as the ORS newsletter and website. A call for Expressions of Interest for the current allocation of CFI JELF funding will be sent out in October 2025.
Please visit the Canada Foundation for Innovation website for more information on the JELF program.
The CFI Innovation Fund (IF) supports transformative infrastructure projects that would underpin cutting-edge, globally competitive research. It enables institutions and their researchers to build on established capabilities to accelerate current research and technology development to enhance strategic priority areas. This competition is approximately every two years.
In an effort to maximize development time and support to potential Innovation Fund applicants, the University of Regina will undertake an internal strategic review of Expressions of Interest to identify UofR-led projects moving forward for the 2027 competition.
UofR researchers who wish to participate in an Innovation Fund proposal being led by another institution where a contribution from the UofR’s CFI envelope is being requested by the lead institution must contact the Director of Research Services as early as possible in the process. Envelope contributions are allocated to UofR-led projects first and remaining envelope availability for those projects led by other institutions is limited. Please visit the Canada Foundation for Innovation website more information on the CFI IF program.
