International Day of Immunology
Celebrating International Immunology Day: Biology Students Lead Inspiring Outreach Events
A group of passionate biology enthusiasts at our university, including Professor Ahmed Khairalla from the Biology Department, recently led two engaging outreach events in celebration of the International Day of Immunology, held annually on April 29th to raise public awareness of the immune system’s crucial role in protecting our health.
This initiative was made possible with the support of the Biology Undergraduate & Graduate Society (BUGS) and included enthusiastic participation from students across the Faculty of Science. The outreach team featured both undergraduate and graduate students: Emily Lightheart, Laura Schnell, Michela Sisti, Mohammed Quraishi, Shivangi Sharma, and Vanna

Outreach Event 1: Wascana Plains School – Monday, April 28, 2025
The outreach team visited six classrooms at Wascana Plains School, where they engaged students
in a variety of fun, hands-on activities and health-related discussions about how the immune system
works and how to protect our bodies from harmful germs.
Outreach Event 2: Saskatchewan Science Centre – Saturday, May 3, 2025
Held from 12:30 to 4:30 PM, this public event brought the excitement of immunology to families and
learners of all ages at the Saskatchewan Science Centre.At both events, participants enjoyed a series of engaging activities, including:
- Exploring “germs” under UV light.
- Using 3D-printed antibody and germ models to explore how antibodies bind to different pathogens.
- Solving immunology-inspired mazes and handing out fun stickers that rewarded curiosity and participation for the little kids.
- Discussions on good hygiene habits and ways to stay healthy.
