Research Week Showcase: Dr. DianLiang Deng

05 November 2024

For the UofR’s Research Week, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is excited to showcase Dr. DianLiang Deng and his research as an NSERC Discovery Grant 2024 recipient!

Dr. DianLiang Deng is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Regina whose research focuses on probability theory, statistics, and their applications in biological and medical sciences. In particular, his current research projects concentrate on the developing estimation methods for longitudinal and survival data, creating adaptive variable selection techniques for censored longitudinal quantile regression models, and exploring techniques that combine proportional regression and machine learning for zero-inflated, over-dispersed proportional data.

Dr. Deng’s research program provides valuable insights into analysis of longitudinal/survival data, discrete data, and gene expression data as well as their applications. His research has gained increasing recognition due to its potential impact in biological fields, medical fields, and its advancements regarding the understanding of biostatistics. He has been an invited speaker at national and international conferences such as SSC Annual meetings, Joint Statistical Meetings, and International Conferences on Statistics and Data Science. The work that has emerged from these projects has been published extensively in top peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Statistical Methods in Medical Research, Journal of Multivariate Analysis, Journal of Theoretical Probability, and Statistics in Medicine.

The intention of Dr. Deng’s research program is (a) to advance knowledge in the statistical analysis of complex data, which can be applied in diverse research fields, and (b) to train highly-qualified personnel with innovative ideas and skills to build statistical models that address real-world problems while focusing on developing statistical talents in line with EDI principles. As a result, he has three graduate students working on his team who are on their way to being top-researchers!

For any students, faculty members, or researchers who are interested in learning more about Dr. Deng and his research program, please see his website  or contact him via mail at DianLiang.Deng@uregina.ca.
