Earth Day 2026
Campus Community Celebrates Earth Day by Choosing Reuse and Growing Sustainability
On April 22, 2026, the University of Regina community came together to celebrate Earth Day through small actions that can make a meaningful difference for the environment.
Earth Day is celebrated annually around the world on April 22 and serves as a reminder of our shared responsibility to protect the planet. Since 1970, Earth Day has inspired millions of people to take action on environmental issues, from conserving natural resources and reducing waste to supporting biodiversity and addressing climate change. The day highlights how individual actions, when taken collectively, can create significant positive change for communities and ecosystems.
The Sustainability Office partnered with Ultimate Rotisserie Experience to provide free coffee to anyone who brought a reusable mug. The initiative was designed to promote waste reduction and encourage reusable alternatives to single-use items. The response from the campus community was overwhelmingly positive! Throughout the event, participants chose reusable mugs over disposable cups, resulting in 265 single-use cups being avoided. This simple action helped save an estimated:
- 795 kg of plastic
- 186 MJ of energy
- 963 kg of timber
- 539 kg of CO₂ equivalent emissions
These savings demonstrate how small, everyday choices can collectively have a measurable environmental impact.
In addition to enjoying a free coffee, community members were invited to share the actions they take to live more sustainably. Participants contributed ideas ranging from using reusable water bottles and shopping bags to biking, composting, conserving resources, reducing food waste, and supporting local businesses. The activity showcased the many ways sustainability can be incorporated into daily life and highlighted the collective commitment of the University community to creating a more sustainable future.

Earth Day celebrations also extended beyond the coffee station. The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies hosted a seed giveaway, providing free packages of Bees n' Butterfly Mix and Prairie Meadow Native Grass Seed Mix. The initiative encouraged participants to support pollinators, enhance local biodiversity, and contribute to healthier ecosystems.
Together, these Earth Day activities reflected the University's ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Whether through reducing waste, supporting pollinators, or conserving resources, every action contributes to a healthier campus and a more resilient planet!
