Ride Ready Program Helps Advance Sustainability on Campus by Removing Barriers to Cycling

Getting to campus by bike is becoming easier, safer, and more accessible thanks to the University of Regina's Ride Ready program.

Launched through a partnership between the University of Regina Sustainability Office, Dr. John Archer Library & Archives, Bike Regina, and Dutch Cycle, the initiative provides students, faculty, and staff with free access to cycling essentials. For many, concerns about theft or unexpected mechanical issues can discourage riding. By providing access to reliable locks and repair equipment, Ride Ready helps eliminate these obstacles while promoting a bike-friendly campus culture.

As part of the program, three U-lock bike locks, a bike pump, and a bike repair kit are now available for loan through the Dr. John Archer Library. Members of the campus community can borrow these items at no cost, making it easier for both new and experienced cyclists to travel to campus with confidence.

The Ride Ready program was officially launched with a campus celebration that featured presentations highlighting the environmental, health, and community benefits of cycling, as well as practical demonstrations showing participants how to use bike repair tools and properly secure their bicycles using U-locks.

The Ride Ready Program supports the University’s commitment to sustainability by making active transportation more accessible, convenient, and affordable for students, staff, and faculty. It advances priorities within the Sustainability Action Plan by promoting low-emission transportation, supporting campus well-being, and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and community engagement.

The program also aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By reducing barriers to cycling, Ride Ready encourages transportation choices that contribute to reduced greenhouse gas emissions (SDGs 7: Affordable and Clean Energy and 13: Climate Action). At the same time, cycling supports physical and mental well-being (SDG3: Good Health and Well-being), while improving access to transportation and helping build a more connected and inclusive community (SDGs 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, 10: Reduced Inequalities, and 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities).

The initiative also supports the University's efforts to create a campus environment where sustainable choices are practical, accessible, and supported through partnerships and shared resources. Whether someone is commuting to class, heading to work, or simply exploring Regina by bike, Ride Ready ensures they have access to the tools needed to travel sustainably. By reducing barriers to cycling and encouraging active transportation, the program is helping create a healthier, more connected, and more environmentally responsible campus community.
