Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are registered nurses with additional education and nursing experience which provides them with the legal scope of practice to:
- Autonomously diagnose and treat illnesses
- Order and interpret tests
- Prescribe medication
- Perform minor surgical procedures
- Refer to specialists
- NPs are health care professionals who treat the whole person which includes:
- Addressing physical, mental, emotional needs
- Focusing on how an illness affects a person’s life and family
- Offering ways for a person to lead a healthy life
- Collaborating with the person to manage chronic illness (asthma, diabetes, mental health etc) as well as episodic illness (coughs, colds, flu, sexual health concerns such as contraception, skin conditions etc)
