Winter Snowcase

Drop by the Studio at the Cornwall Centre between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on December 3 and join in on a variety of activities! From animation workshops and gadget making to fashion shows and story time, you’re sure to find something you, your little ones, or your friends will love. Plus, there will be contests and prizes, music, hot chocolate, half-price application fees for prospective undergraduate students, and so much more!

  • Come print your own greeting card from real lead type on the U of R’s 140-year-old Model One Improved letterpress!
  • Get your photo taken with our mascot Reggie
  • Get your gifts wrapped by members of our Res Life team and donate to a great cause
  • Get all of your questions answered by representatives from our faculties and service units, as well as Human Resources and Alumni Relations

Workshops

Light Your Way - Make a Flashlight!

10 - 10:30 a.m. - EYES

Kids of all ages, including kids at heart, will enjoy making a DIY flashlight and learning the science behind it!

Interactive Circuits

10:45 - 11:15 a.m. - Department of Creative Technologies

In this hands-on workshop, participants will experiment and play with interactive electronics! Stop by to create interactive art and designs with sensors, lights, movement and sound.

Holiday Story Time

11:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. - Department of English

Bring your tiny humans to our holiday story circle!

Direct Animation

12:15 - 12:45 p.m. - Department of Film

Workshop participants will create camera-less animation using simple, everyday tools.

Oxygen Utilization During Exercise

1 - 1:30 p.m. - Faculty of Kinesiology & Health Studies

Oxygen is required in order for the body to produce high energy phosphate. The ability to consume oxygen is directly related to aerobic fitness and the ability to exercise for extended periods of time at moderate intensity.

Looking at Rocks, Minerals and Fossils

1:45 - 2:15 p.m. - Department of Geology

We will look at these items with instruments commonly used by geologists and environmental geologists including a microscope and drone.

Puppet Making

2:30 - 3 p.m. - Conservatory of Performing Arts

Join staff from the Conservatory of Performing Arts for a simple popsicle stick puppet making activity suitable for all ages. If you make a puppet, you can even get a chance to perform with your new creations in our little puppet theatre!

Cougars and Cubs Soccer Class Demo

3:15 - 3:45 p.m. - U of R Women's Soccer Team

Join the UofR women’s soccer team for a mini Cougars & Cubs soccer class! This activity is for kids 2-4 and a big helper. The mini class is a mix of soccer activities and physical literacy fun!

Robots Are Not Just For Kids

4 - 4:30 p.m. - Lifelong Learning Centre

Learn how to use a social robot named Mindy. Make her say something funny, move her arms, change her facial expression, play a song or game. If you know how to use a smart phone or tablet, you can learn how to be a robot handler in under 10 minutes. Participants will have a chance to earn a Level 1 Robot Handler badge or make a holiday music video for Instagram or Facebook.

Instrument Petting Zoo

4:45 - 5:15 p.m. - Conservatory of Performing Arts

Come try out a variety of musical and small handheld percussion instruments. Play, practice and perform with our instruments and have some fun at our mini zoo of musical instruments.

Greenscreen Magic

5:30 - 6:00 p.m. - Department of Film

This workshop will show participants how to create digital effects using one of the most powerful techniques in contemporary cinema: Greenscreen keying. Keying allows the filmmaker to superimpose actors in situations that don't exist or are too expensive to create otherwise

Come watch students & staff strut their stuff on the runway while modeling clothing that can be purchased from our University Bookstore!

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to begin DJing with a turntable and vinyl records, and how to start making and playing beats on an MPC.
