English Language Proficiency (ELP) Requirements
The language of instruction for most programs at the University of Regina is English. Most applicants to the University of Regina must, therefore, demonstrate an appropriate level of proficiency in English.
The following will be accepted as satisfactory evidence of ELP:
You may meet the English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirement for admission if the main language of instruction of your high school or secondary school studies was English. Find out which countries are considered to have an English-based curriculum by viewing our English Test Exemption List.
One of the following will be accepted for students who have completed their secondary education from either a country on the English Test Exemption List, or where their studies were completed at a recognized secondary school where English was the primary language of instruction:
- Successful completion of at least 3 years of formal, full-time study including grade 10, 11, and 12 with successful completion of a grade 12 English Language Arts course, or
- Successful completion of at least 2 years of formal, full-time study including grade 11 and 12 with successful completion of a grade 12 English Language Arts course with a minimum final grade of 75%, or
- Graduation from a Canadian secondary school with a grade 12 English Language Arts course with a minimum final grade of 75%.
You may meet the English proficiency requirement if you have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours (University of Regina degree level equivalent) from a post-secondary institution where English was the main medium of instruction and the studies included at least 6 credit hours in humanities or social science subjects and with a minimum grade point average of 60.00% (based on a 50% passing scale). Post-secondary institutions that meet this requirement must be verified by the University of Regina using industry-recognized higher education resources. The Faculty of Nursing will allow the use of post-secondary studies as the demonstration of English proficiency, as long as the studies were completed within two (2) years of application to the Faculty.
The following English language proficiency tests are accepted for all undergraduate programs except those in the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Nursing.
Unless otherwise stated, all test results must be sent directly from the testing agency to the Admissions Office before the application document deadline. Test scores are valid for two years from the test date.
