Project Resilience
A Lifeline Through Education
Amid ongoing conflict and the collapse of international scholarship support, Afghan women students face the threat of forced return to Afghanistan where their safety and right to education are severely compromised. Following the Taliban’s return to power, Afghanistan has become the only country in the world that bans education for girls beyond primary school. These young women, many of them among the top of their academic cohorts, now face the devastating prospect of deportation, forced marriage, imprisonment—or worse. Most recently, over 240 Afghan women studying abroad lost their scholarships after the suspension of U.S. government funding, placing their lives and dreams in immediate jeopardy.
Education is more than just education. I am going to university for my entire nation, for each and every woman in Afghanistan who has no means to speak for herself. Education is my right, and I want to be the voice for those who don't have it.
— Spogmai, graduate student
The University of Regina, in partnership with Women Leaders of Tomorrow, is taking urgent action and stepping forward as a place of refuge, learning, and opportunity to ensure these students can remain safe and stable while pursuing their studies.
In 2022, the University of Regina established a fund—Project Resilience—to support students affected by war or other forms of political violence in their home countries so they may continue their studies at the U of R. We are relaunching Project Resilience to establish scholarships, provide housing, meals, and deliver other supports for these students, so that they can continue their education with dignity and purpose. But the need has now outpaced our capacity. We are working to raise $500,000 to support as many Afghan women students as possible. The total annual cost per student is approximately $40,000.
Your gift, of any amount, extends hope, stability, and dignity to young women who have already overcome unimaginable odds. Together we can help them reclaim their future through education and compassion.
