Sheena's Story - Public Relations
Hi, my name is Sheena and I completed the Public Relations certificate in June 2018. I am the Manager of Marketing and Communications for a Regional College located in Southeastern Saskatchewan. Although I have worked in various roles within the college system for the past 11 years, my passion lies within the marketing, communications and public relations area.
I chose to take the Public Relations Certificate as part of my Professional Development plan. I had been out of school for a number of years and felt the time was right to enhance and refresh some of education and skills I had learned over the past 20 years. While browsing the U of R website, I found some information on this program and was drawn to it. It seemed like the perfect fit.
There was so many “ah ha” moments working through the various classes within the Public Relations certificate. From the very first class I experienced a vast number of learning moments that left me feeling confident and empowered.
Taking the Public Relations certificate has enhanced that confidence. I know that I possess both the experience and education to ensure that I am doing the best possible job for my company and my fellow employees. A win-win for both my employer and myself.
The best thing about the Public Relations certificate was that I could take all five classes online. Living two hours away from Regina, working at a full time job and having a busy family with young children made it very difficult if not almost impossible to travel for classes. The online classes were structured so that I could work at times that were convenient for me – lunch hours, evenings, weekends. The time given to complete the assignments, projects and discussions was flexible enough that even if I had a crazy week, I still had time to get my course work completed.
I would recommend this course to anyone who regularly communicates with the public or wants to enhance his or her communication skills. This course can truly benefit anyone looking to know more about public relations regardless of the industry of work that you are in.
