Lab-Specific (Site-Specific) Orientation Checklist: Wet Labs
Lab-Specific (Site-Specific) Orientation Checklist: Dry Labs
Lab and Office Exit inspection
(Excludes computer labs)
Lab-specific, in-person orientations - led by the supervisor or professor - are essential for ensuring the safety of lab users, maintaining research integrity, and complying with safety regulations and the APEGS Code of Ethics.
While general safety training (U of R Chemical & Lab Safety, WHMIS, Biosafety, online orientations) provides important foundational knowledge, it does not address the specific hazards, procedures, and expectations unique to each lab environment. Lab-specific orientations offer hands-on, contextual learning that general training cannot provide.
These orientations also serve as a key opportunity for supervisors to:
- Communicate lab-specific hazards and safe operating procedures
- Outline customized emergency protocols
- Set clear expectations for safety and conduct
- Assess the new student or staff member’s competency in relevant lab techniques
Documenting these orientations is a critical part of a supervisor’s due diligence and demonstrates compliance with institutional and professional safety standards.
Lab-Specific (Site-Specific) Orientation Requirements
- Mandatory: Supervisors and new graduate students or staff must complete the lab-specific orientation together before lab access is granted.
- The appropriate orientation checklist (wet lab or dry lab) must be completed in person, within the lab.
- Supervisors may customize the checklist to reflect specific lab procedures and hazards.
Submitting Orientation Documentation
- Graduate Students: When submitting an online lab key request, supervisors must upload the completed lab-specific orientation checklist as part of their approval.
- Visiting Students, Capstone Students, and Research Staff: These individuals must use the PDF lab access form and email it to Engg.Safety@uregina.ca. The completed lab-specific orientation checklist must be included with this form.
Additional Notes
This lab-specific orientation checklist does not replace the supervisor’s requirement to complete a Hazard Assessment. A hazard assessment is still required for all new research lab access requests (again, excluding computer labs).
includes all of the forms necessary for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff, to apply for access to offices, labs, and other secure spaces.
Working alone in certain circumstances, situations, or environments can be unsafe and requires special arrangements to minimize potential situations and hazards. Students working or studying alone or outside regular university hours should evaluate the hazards and make arrangements to reduce the risks. Campus Security provides assistance with their Lone Worker Service.
